Melo Alvim House is the oldest urban manor house in Viana do Castelo. Faithfully refurbished, this lordly house of the XVI Century has turned into a comfortable and cosy Inn. Right in the historical nucleus of the town, Melo Alvim House provides the Guest calm and tranquillity also fitting the environment features.

If on the one hand the original historic and cultural architectonic lavishness was wisely preserved in the restoration and adaptation to an Inn, on the other hand some details were emphasized and ambiances were created so as to lead the Guest through the distinct stages of the history of Portuguese architecture: “Manuelino”, “Chão” (Plain), “Barroco” (Baroque), “Rococó” (Decadence) and “Romantic”. The interior ambience reflects a permanent game of colours, of light and materials, standing out a kind of spatial character, never forgetting, however, to provide comfort and handiness.

Furniture with neoclassic characteristics. Simple shapes and simple techniques, while compared with the precedent styles. Curves give place to straight lines, or, at least, to lines which were less marked. Chair arms just slightly curved, and legs are always straight. Wood of mahogany and walnut are the mostly used materials, as well as natural coloured noble wood, such as ebony and satinwood. Inlaid works and veneer are often employed. The backs of beds are a wonderful example of how to take advantage of wood. At the centre of the town Guests will feel at home, a feeling shared in the past by the founder Pedro Pinto, the heir of the entail of Carreira, and also by Francisco de Melo Alvim, a fighter in India… The welcome of Guests in “Francisco Melo Alvim” Hall is the beginning of a sojourn in a cosy and refreshing environment. A Baroque styled balustrade staircase leads to the upper floors and Library, as well.

After or before a meal Guests have the chance to enjoy their favourite drink in the cosy Bar, while listening to a piano melody. The leisure Garden and the adjoining cloister add to relaxation, quietness and tranquillity… The cookery based on traditional - yet creative – gastronomy has a detached place at the Restaurant “Conde Camarido” (Count of Camarido), which is another reference in the history of the House.

“Carreira Room” and “Crúzios Room” where meetings, exhibitions and special events can take place. At its whole, the House provides the organization of banquets, special events, meetings and exhibitions.
